Indian University Opts for Nortel's Wireless Mesh and WiMax Solutions

The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), a university in India's Arunachal Pradesh state, has selected Wireless Mesh and WiMAX solutions from communications solutions provider Nortel to deliver indoor and outdoor wireless connectivity across its mountainous campus area.

NERIST is divided into two campuses across a rugged terrain. That’s why providing higher-bandwidth connectivity through regular cabling would have been expensive and time-consuming. Using Nortel's wireless solutions, the Institute can provide high-speed connectivity across its entire campus, as well as complete mobility for its students and staff.

The WiMAX solution will be used as the last-mile, high-speed broadband access technology linking the two campuses. Users at both campus sites can access the Institute's network infrastructure using the Wireless Mesh network solution. Despite the fact that the two campuses are geographically divided by the terrain, the entire campus area is unified by a single secure network.

The solution provides high-bandwidth capabilities across several kilometers and is available from Nortel in the unlicensed 5.8GHz band, which means that the Institute can use existing spectrum, saving the cost of licensing, the company claims.

NERIST hopes save over 70 percent on network operational costs by selecting Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network technology rather than a standard Wi-Fi solution.
