Study: LTE Mobile Broadband to Drive $70 Billion by 2014

Juniper Research reportedly has released a study, titled “LTE Mobile Broadband Strategies: Consumer & Enterprise Markets; Devices & Chipsets 2009-2014,” predicting that LTE mobile broadband will generate global revenues of $70 billion by the end of 2014.

The market research firm claims that LTE will boost download speeds to 100 mega bits per second, helping businesses and individuals perform transactions much faster than they are doing today, a prime motivating factor for the technology to be universally adopted, provided service providers can keep prices competitive.

This information recalls a report cited earlier on MobilityTechzone, claiming that cited mobile or wireless broadband usage has sky-rocketed by 84 percent from 2007 to 2008 and that by 2013 more than 33 percent of all mobile subscribers will be Wi-B enabled.

“LTE will offer broadband speeds of up to 100mbit/s or more: this is at least five times faster than the best mobile broadband now and around 20 times faster than most people experience via fixed DSL,” said Howard Wilcox, author of the new research and a senior analyst at Juniper. “The challenge for mobile operators is how to make profits yet keep prices attractive enough for subscribers to sign up. It’s all about the business case.”

The study claims that mobile broadband has attracted the consumer electronic device industry and that companies are seriously considering next-generation portable games consoles and digital cameras. TMC recently reported on a product line built on almost similar concepts, the Pixavi Xcaster high definition video camera, that provides video and screen capture images wirelessly to WiFi Access Points, WiMAX and WiFi routers, satellite transponders and assorted antennas, and onwards to other Internet destinations.

According to the study, LTE’s main market will be North America, Western Europe, the Far East and China that collectively contribute 90 percent of the market share, and that the recession will impact LTE progress in the immediate future but not in the long term.
