A close look at the telecommunications industry and LTE is an inevitable reality in the near future. To learn more about it, MobilityTechzone’s Rich Tehrani recently spoke with Amir Makleff, President and CEO of BridgeWave. Their conversation was captured in this video.

BridgeWaves plays in the millimeter wave high frequency point to point market, a key element in solving backhaul problems for 4G and 3G networks. There has been tremendous growth in this area in the past year – 46 percent. In the first half of this year, growth has been 400 percent over all of 2009.When asked if key drivers in this space are wireless devices, Makleff noted that the drivers are 4G networks and smartphones and iPhones that are demanding a lot of data. As for industry trends, Makleff noted, “So we’re seeing with the introduction of smart devices, more and people are worried about network congestion.

As people try to put fiber to get to the base stations, they find it is not practical.“When you use microsolutions, you have to have very high capacity and that forces you to go to the higher frequency bands where we operate. The trend is moving up in those frequencies,” added Makleff. He went on to highlight that the most popular band for backhaul is 70G and links have to be licensed. 60GB is not licensed but is likely to be seen more in the future.

Greater demands for data and content continue to increase, networks are going to have to be able to deliver.

For those people who deploy 4G, there is tremendous demand for this backhaul. Other countries and operators are lagging in 4G, which is a challenge in the market. The company, however, is anticipating greater demand in 2011 and beyond.

As Makleff noted, LTE will have to become common to keep up with this demand; it is only a matter of time. What’s next for BridgeWave? Last year the company introduced carrier-class product which is being adopted by large networks for LTE deployments and they expect that to continue to develop into next year. The company also announced recently a relationship with a global company to take the technology to a whole new level.
