Ericsson Named One of Four 'Leaders' in Magic Quadrant for LTE Network Infrastructure

Ericsson has once again been named a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) market leader. It marks the fourth year in a row of such recognition from the Gartner Group.

The company was honored as a leader in the Magic Quadrant for LTE Network Infrastructure after it was examined among many vendors of LTE radio and core equipment.

Other companies were also listed recently as leaders in the LTE Network Infrastructure Magic Quadrant. They are Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks. To come up with the leaders, Gartner looked at 10 vendors.

Gartner predicts that the market will increase from $10.8 billion in 2013 to $33.6 billion in 2017. LTE network infrastructure will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.8 percent over that time. That means it is the fastest-growing segment in the carrier network infrastructure market.

In its review of Ericsson, Gartner said, “Ericsson remains in a good position in the LTE infrastructure market, aided by its leading share of the 2G/3G/4G mobile network infrastructure market (35 percent in 2012). Ericsson's wideband CDMA (WCDMA), CDMA and end-to-end LTE offerings and footprint, together with its professional services, put it in a strong position to win business from 3GPP accounts. Ericsson's in-house IP capabilities are improving. The mobile network infrastructure market remains competitive, however, and Ericsson's nearest competitors gained market share in 2012.”

Ericsson offers network solutions that have Wi-Fi integration for small cells, a large footprint, wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA) and professional services, according to a company statement.

"We are pleased Gartner has recognized us as a leader in the LTE Magic Quadrant yet another year running,” Thomas Norén, vice president and head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson, said in the statement. “We believe this confirms other independent measurements and leading operator reports that Ericsson has the best network performance in the industry.”

Ericsson, which manages networks that connect to over 800 million subscribers, is among the top 10 LTE operators as ranked by subscriptions as of May. Also, Ericsson holds about 25 percent of all essential patents for LTE.

“We are also the only vendor that has commercial Antenna Integrated Radio products, which deploy quickly and bring further radio coverage benefits that enable operators to provide higher speeds and handle more traffic cost effectively,” Norén added. “Ericsson will continue to show leadership in services; for example, we are the leading vendor of VoLTE [Voice over LTE] and LTE Broadcast."
