Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems added more revenue share in the enterprise and outdoor segments than any other companies when it comes to the wireless local area network (WLAN) market in Q2.
It marks the second quarter in a row that the two companies were on top in the segment, according to a new study from the Dell'Oro Group.
Overall, the WLAN market jumped 13 percent in the recent quarter of 2013 compared to Q2 of 2012, the Dell'Oro Group said.
The study noted some key trends during the recent quarter.
"Similar to recent quarters, two end-markets drove the enterprise-class WLAN market more rapidly than others: service providers and small and medium businesses. Vendors have responded to this growth by developing new, specially-designed products that are shaping the WLAN infrastructure market," Chris DePuy, vice president of WLAN Research at Dell'Oro Group, said in a statement from the firm.
It was also noted in the study how vendors developed high-capacity controllers for service providers. In addition, “cloud-managed services, controller-less access points, and highly-affordable downloadable or embedded controller software systems have entered the marketplace to serve the needs of these unique customer segments," DePuy added.
When it comes to the combined enterprise-class and outdoor mesh nodes category, vendors which saw increased revenue were not only Cisco Systems and Hewlett-Packard, but also Aruba Networks.
And in the Service Provider Wi-Fi category, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Ruckus Wireless each reached double-digit unit-share in Q2.
In another recent study, International Data Corporation (IDC) said WLAN – made up of consumer and enterprise worldwide markets – jumped 10.8 percent in Q2 of 2013 when comparing results with Q2 of 2012.
The enterprise portion of WLAN increased 14.8 percent, when comparing the two quarters, IDC added.
“While the pace of the enterprise WLAN market growth is starting to slow from the 20 percent-plus year-over-year increases witnessed in the last several years, the enterprise WLAN market continues to be one of the fastest growing networking markets out there,” IDC said in a recent statement quoted by MobilityTechzone.
"Across all verticals and geographies, enterprise IT continues to see an explosion of mobility applications running on more devices than ever, resulting in new investments in WLAN infrastructure," Rohit Mehra, vice president of Network Infrastructure at IDC, said in a recent statement from the firm.
Mehra predicts the outlook is good, too.
"While growth slowed slightly this quarter compared to previous quarters, the growing mobility needs of education, retail, healthcare, and other distributed enterprise segments will continue to fuel substantial growth in the overall enterprise WLAN market," Mehra said.
