UppWireless, a new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), is being offered in the United States via T-Mobile’s data network.
UppWireless is best understood as a 4G mobile service which lets users get access to the Internet without wireless carriers. In addition, UppWireless is buying data access from a reseller instead of from T-Mobile, according to Phone News.
Among its most impressive benefits is how the cost is relatively economical. It is $15 a month for 1GB of data at 4G speeds, plus unlimited talk and texts in the United States and Canada. Unlimited data offerings start at $35 a month. UppTalk’s CEO Jochen Doppelhammer says no other company in the United States offers “anything closely as attractive,” TechCrunch reported.
Using UppTalk, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and messaging app, which was launched in December, UppWireless offers users unlimited calls and SMS to fixed and mobile lines in the United States and Canada.
UppWireless is seen as an option to services such as Republic Wireless, FreedomPop and TextNow, Phone News adds.
Doppelhammer told TechCrunch the company will at some point offer the service in Europe, as well. As for now, what is its place in the North American market? "We’re not competing with WeChat and Line for the mobile platform in the Facebook way, which is what they do,” Doppelhammer explained in a statement to TechCrunch. “I’d say we’re complementing WhatsApp, WeChat and Line.… And we want to provide just the best experience using the apps and services they prefer rather than forcing them to use carrier services.”
That is the same WhatsApp that Facebook acquired for $19 billion – in a price announced this week. WhatsApp has 450 million users, with millions more likely to be added soon, according to predictions carried in news reports. WhatsApp sends messages through mobile broadband.
