Enhanced UMTS Test Tools Announced by GL Communications

Enhanced UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) analysis and emulation tools have been announced by GL Communications.

The tools meet the needs found in the mobile technology marketplace – given the sector’s specific requirements. “The analyzer provides capturing and decoding capabilities across various interfaces,” Jagdish Vadalia, senior manager of product development at GL Communications, said in a statement to the media. “And the emulator is capable of simulating the major interfaces across the Circuit-Switched (CS) as well as Packet-Switched (PS) data in the UTRAN network.”

The tools allow for thorough testing of the UMTS network, as well. The analyzer assists in diagnosis and troubleshooting of the UMTS network. “GL's UMTS protocol analyzer is capable of capturing, decoding and performing various test measurements across various interfaces, i.e., Iub, Iur, IuCS and IuPS interfaces of the UMTS network,” Vadalia said. It supports Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or Internet Protocol (IP) as a transport layer. IP and ATM are the most preferred transport network layer protocol alternatives used in the UMTS, according to a report from Satnews. The report adds that the ATM-based UMTS network is actually the more popular of the options because “it ensures various QoS [quality of service] and Classes of Services to the end user.”

Another benefit from the UMTS analyzer is that multiple instances can be run at the same time. They can capture both off-line and real-time data on several T1 E1 lines, the company said. Also, they can capture and reassemble frames which were transmitted with inverse multiplexing, Vadalia added.

“MAPS [Message Automation & Protocol Simulation] UMTS IuCS emulator can emulate the RNC (Radio Network Controller) and MSC (Mobile Switching Center),” he said. This is achieved by “generating RANAP [Radio Access Network Application Part protocol] and DTAP [Direct Transfer Application Part] signaling messages over SCTP [Stream Control Transmission Protocol],” he explained.
