Super Wi-Fi Provides Alternative Wireless Access

Super Wi-Fi is getting a lot more attention in the tech sector. Basically, it includes alternative wireless access solutions, such as TV White Space, hetnets, spectrum sharing solutions, cognitive radio solutions, and other spectrum frequencies that can be redirected and used on demand.

Alternative wireless access is needed as companies keep up with the growing demand for data.

The topic was addressed during ITEXPO Miami. At that trade show, Heikki Kokkinen, CEO of Finland’s Fairspectrum, reported that the sector is growing.

“The good thing that will happen this year will be the number of devices sold in 2014 will be at least ten times more than 2013,” he told TMC’s Rachel Ramsey. “Investment will grow dramatically this year compared to last year.”

In addition, people in rural locations will increasingly get broadband Internet access. “People who have not had the possibility to get broadband Internet access will get it thanks to Super Wi-Fi and TV whitespace,” he said.

Fairspectrum is a Finnish startup using Internet services and computational geometry in the field of radio spectrum sharing. Fairspectrum provides consulting and radio spectrum management tools for businesses which offer fixed wireless Internet or private LTE networks.

The company says that TV White Space can improve data communication by increasing data rates or coverage area. Spectrum sharing in TV White Space is managed with a geolocation database. Fairspectrum provides a geolocation database for the communication system.

In August, TMC will present a Super Wi-Fi Summit Conference Program. Among the topics to be discussed are those of interest to the entire shared spectrum community. One of the topics is how alternatives to licensed spectrum can be used to meet broadband demand. The Super Wi-Fi Summit, The Global Spectrum Sharing and TV White Space Event will take place Aug. 12 through Aug. 14 2014, at The Rio in Las Vegas. For more information, please click here.
