Mobility TechZone Week in Review

Another huge week in news has come and gone in the Mobility TechZone, and that means it's time for a summary of all the biggest events with our Mobility TechZone Week in Review!

First out of the gate was news that the United States may be facing a critical shortage of mobile bandwidth. A combination of huge numbers of mobile devices coming online combined with a marked lack of investment in infrastructure and new channel development has combined to bring the potential for a deficit starting in the year 2013, and getting progressively worse. The bandwidth shortage may cause slowdowns in use, dropped connections, and higher prices on data access.

Next was word that purchasing in telecom capital expenses was expected to spike by the end of 2012, and then level off somewhat as more networks look to ready their LTE networks for operation and perform similar upgrades to get their offerings on par with their competitors' offerings. Substantial consumer demand is perhaps the biggest driver behind the rapid expansion efforts, as is a bid to fend off competitors and gain more market share.

Then, reports emerged that Nokia's 808 Pureview would be making its way to the United States, and would be made available for purchase on Amazon. A check of Amazon showed that preorders are already underway and delivery is expected for July 8. The Nokia 808 Pureview, which first made its appearance during 2012's Mobile World Congress show, drew a lot of attention with its ultra-powerful 41 megapixel camera and accompanying Pureview image technology. The phone will be available, SIM-free, for $699.

Next, there was commentary about the recent announcement of the Microsoft Surface tablet, and a comparative look at Microsoft's marketing against Apple's. The end result of said comparison was the conclusion that Apple just has Microsoft beat in terms of marketing savvy, at least, on the surface. But the future is not lost for Microsoft, who has done great things in terms of capturing imaginations with marketing previously, so the chances of a comeback are likely.

Finally, word emerged that LG was looking to get out of the tablet market entirely, and instead focus its efforts and resources on the smartphone and similar mobile device markets. The LG Optimus Pad LTE, a release from earlier this year, struggled to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung's offerings, and couldn't gain the necessary ground in a hotly competitive market. But with solid smartphone sales numbers, and a OLED television line likely to hit this winter, LG is looking to play to its strengths.
