Tablets Exceed Smartphones for Traffic Being Sent to Online Commerce Sites

Tablets – including iPads – now exceed smartphones in the traffic they send to online commerce sites.

In fact, 95 percent of the tablet traffic category was recently from the iPad, according to GigaOM's Ryan Kim.

In the Q1 of 2012, traffic from tablets to online commerce sites reached 6.52 percent, more than traffic from smartphones, which saw 5.35 percent, Monetate said.

It is the first time tablets surpassed smartphones in the category.

Also, tablet traffic jumped 348 percent and smartphone increased by 117 percent – both during the last year.

On the other hand, PC traffic to online commerce sites fell to 88 percent, which represents a four percent drop in one quarter.

In May, Adobe projected tablet traffic will surpass smartphones by early 2013 and will be some 10 percent of website traffic in early 2014, according to GigaOM.

In addition, iPads and other tablets will, by 2016, exceed notebook PCs sales in the U.S., predicts Monetate. Kurt Heinemann, CMO of Monetate, also predicts that tablet traffic will reach double digits by the winter holiday season during 2012.

“Tablets are at an inflection point, where it’s coming into its own as a primary Internet portal,” Heinemann told GigaOM. “It’s only going to grow at this point.”

In another study, sales of smartphones and tablet PCs will likely increase as will other personal computing devices. These devices include e-readers and ultra-books.This trend will likely “drive the next major power-cycle for major growth in the semiconductor industry,” MobilityTechzone reports.

“These electronics are anticipated to contribute $100 billion in revenues to the semiconductor industry in 2012 and this is expected to grow to $230 billion by 2016.” The data comes from "Personal Electronics Power-cycle: Smartphones and Tablet Devices Drive Growth (with Forecasts Through 2016)."
