How to Build Enterprise Apps That Work

Coding an enterprise mobile app requires significant time and investment – six to nine months and about $250,000, by Forrester Research’s count. Once such significant resources are plowed into creating a mobile enterprise app, there are no guarantees the mobile app will see success. Indeed, IDC reports that one in three mobile apps fail, and SAP says that 78 percent of enterprise mobile apps are abandoned after the first use.

Yet mobile apps have become an important way for organizations to do business. That’s because what people previously did at desktop computers they now do on smartphones and cellular-enabled laptops. So organizations now are creating mobile apps to enable their employees to be more effective while on the move, as well as mobile apps to serve their customers.

Mobile apps can improve business efficiency and workflows, reduce costs, and transform the employee experience. Starbucks, for example, has outfitted its marketing staff with a mobile app to manage inventory, pricing and promotions for its non-coffee products (like coffee mugs and CDs) at the beverage company’s retail locations.

Indeed, leaders at customer-facing organizations want to use such apps to engage customers and employees, and they want to be able to tweak their mobile apps easily over time to address user feedback and industry requirements. That’s important given, as a March story on Enterprise Apps Tech News noted, 50 percent of enterprise mobile apps will have to be rewritten or replaced in two years.

To get more best practices on enterprise app creation, join us Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 2pm Eastern/11am Pacific for the webinar “5 New Rules for Building Enterprise Apps that Matter”. I will be moderating, and the featured speakers will include Keith Higgins, chief marketing officer for North America at Globo, and Piotr Gajor, chief innovation officer of Sourcebits, a Globo company.
